Maize football falls to Derby
October 19, 2018
The Eagles have remained undefeated this season until tonight when they faced undefeated and No. 1 team Derby. Maize fell 35-21.
“We wanted to win,” senior Caleb Grill said. “That was our mentality. To win.”
The Eagles trailed Derby for the duration of the game.
“We went toe-to-toe with them,” senior Jordon Helm said. “We just left it all out there. We knew this one was important to us, but we are alright with it because it puts us in a pretty good spot for the playoffs. We are going to work hard so we can achieve our goals. ”
Helm said that the team is going to work on coming together to improve their performance for the future playoff games.
“We still need to come together as a team,” Helm said. “Sometimes we get lost and pick each other apart, but for the most part we are all working as one and I think we are unstoppable.”
The Panthers first scored against the Eagles five minutes into the first quarter and by the end of the quarter led Maize 14-0.
At the half, Derby was on top 21-7.
The Eagles trailed 21-14 at the top of the fourth. Maize is the first to hold Derby in a scoreless quarter this season.
The Eagles will be back in action Friday at home in the first playoff game.
“For the playoffs I’m just hoping to play like we did tonight,” Helm said. “I hope everyone still comes out because this was a great atmosphere. I’ve never experienced that before.”
