Girls golf ready for regional
October 10, 2018
The girl’s golf regional tournament has been rescheduled to a later date due to inclement weather.
Maize High’s varsity golf team was supposed to compete at regionals on Monday. The tournament will now take place Thursday at Hays. The team has done exceptionally well this year. Varsity head coach Ben Harlow said their success throughout the season has come as a surprise.
“Winning league [made me] really happy for the girls and all of the work that they put in this year and the improvements that they’ve made [really paid off],” Harlow said.
Along with winning league, the team has placed in every tournament and won three of them. Even though they have already achieved success this season, they have their eyes on a bigger prize.
“We all have the team goal that we want to qualify for state as a team,” Harlow said.
Regionals is the next major tournament for the team. The top three teams qualify for state.
Sophomore varsity golfer Brooklyn Blasdel said as long as the team concentrates on what they’re doing, they will be fine.
“Winning regionals is going to take a lot of hard work,” Blasdel said. “The conditions are not going to be good… so hopefully our girls can stay super focused.”
Blasdel said the Eagles work well as a team.
“You can definitely tell on different teams the individuals are competing against each other as much as our team is competing against theirs,” she said. “We truly root for [each of] our teammates, and if they make it to state and someone else doesn’t, we’re happy for them no matter what.”
Even though Blasdel has been successful with a fifth-place finish from the Dodge City tournament and a 20th-place finish at state last year, Blasdel praises her teammates for their individual success.
“Our varsity team is looking pretty good. Lexi Ridder, a fellow sophomore, is doing amazing this year, and so is Riley Hunter, and she’s a senior,” she said.
Blasdel extols her teammates for the hard work that they have put in during the season. She said Ridder and Hunter stand out to her because they possess good work ethic and a desire to elevate their game.
“They’ve been working so hard this year,” she said. “They’re really good golfers, too.”
The team has been in these difficult situations before. Blasdel said the course is difficult, but she hopes they will concentrate on golfing.
“It’s going to be a tough fight,” Blasdel said. “I think if we stay focused, we might just be able to put up a good enough fight to make top five.”
