Eagles handle Goddard, improve to 5-0
September 29, 2018
The Eagles defeated Goddard 27-2 Friday night to remain undefeated. The Eagles are now 5-0.
Sophomore defensive lineman Kyle Haas, who intercepted the first pass of his career Friday, said the Eagles is doing good as a team and practice hard every day.
“We are keeping it going,” Haas said.
The Eagles allowed their first points of the season when Goddard got a safety in the first half to take a 2-0 lead. But that’s all they got, as the Eagles ran off the next 27 points. That matched the total points that Goddard allowed in its first four games.
“This is definitely the toughest game we’ve seen,” said senior center Jacob Quiggle. “We knew it was going to be tough.”
The Eagles took a 7-2 lead into halftime after Caleb Grill hit K.J. Hampton with a pass late in the second quarter. In the second half, Grill scored two rushing touchdowns. Caden Cox also scored.
Goddard’s offense came close to scoring a couple of times during the game, but the defense continued to hold strong. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 191-2 this season.
Coach Gary Guzman said it feels good to be 5-0 and he is happy for the players.
“We had a tough game here, but we did some good things in the second half.” Guzman said. “I’m happy for the kids, 5-0 it’s because of them because they put a lot of work in during the summer and during the offseason. When they can come out here and have success, it’s good.”
The Eagles will play their final road game of the season Friday, traveling to winless Salina South, before closing the regular season out at home with Salina Central (4-1) and Derby (5-0).
