The girls soccer team was handed their first loss of the season with a 3-2 defeat to St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday at home.

The score was tied 2-2 with 8:19 to play. Aquinas scored a goal with five minutes remaining in the game.

Sophomore Mallory Stegman scored one of the goals for the Eagles in the game.

“It felt amazing to score against them,” she said. “I went into this game hoping to score and hungry for a goal, but I didn’t think it would happen. It think it really fired my team up also because it showed we had a chance to beat one of the best teams in Kansas.”

The girls defeated Goddard 3-1 on Tuesday at Goddard.

They also defeated Salina Central 10-0 at home on Thursday. The game ended with 15:59 remaining in the second half.

Goals were scored by senior Bailey Stedman, juniors Kourtnee Davis (3) and Cammie Davis, sophomores Mallory Stegman (2) and Nayeli Reveles and freshmen Reina Cline and Kaylee Wilcox.

Senior Ashlyn Lakin’s front flip throw video from the Maize vs. Maize South game last week was posted on Twitter by ABC News on Monday.

“This might be one of the most epic soccer goals of all time: Kansas high school soccer star Ashley delivers a front flip throw to set up her teammate Rachel to hit a game-winning goal,” ABC News said.

Although yes, they did spell her name incorrect.

Stegman said the team chemistry has had a huge, positive impact on this season so far.

She said that senior captions, Lakin, Bailey Stedman and Liz Palmar have set a great example of how to be a team and how to work together.

The girls will be back in action on Monday.

The baseball team defeated Northwest 11-7 and Goddard 1-0 on Friday at Goddard.

The boys fell to Salina South 8-2 on Tuesday at Salina South.

They will be back on Tuesday.

The softball team swept Salina South in a double header on Tuesday; 8-0 in game one and 13-1 in game two.

The girls competed in the Sunflower League Softball Festival on Friday in games against Leavenworth and Olathe South. They defeated Leavenworth 15-3. Senior Savie Hughes had a three-run home run and Lexie Pitcher hit a grand slam.

The Eagles will be back on Tuesday.

The golf team took 5th overall at Terradyne on Monday.

Senior Nolan Brackin shot 76 and took 8th. This was the first time Brackin has placed in a tournament.

Other scores: Junior Jared Murphy 78, freshman Tanner Prophet 87 and junior Tanner Cunningham 87.

The boys also traveled to Sand Creek on Tuesday to compete in the Newton Invitational. Brackin placed 9th with a score of 85.

“My goal this year was to place in a regular season tournament,” Brackin said.

Brackin also said that he is looking forward to competing in Topeka and going to state.

“My dad got me started on golf and he lives in Kansas City so he usually only gets to come to one tournament in Topeka,” he said. “Although that is one of the hardest tournament we play in, it’s just cool to have my dad there for me […] hopefully I’ll be able to do well at regionals so I can play at state for my dad.”

The golfers will be back in action on Friday.

The track team competed at Pittsburg State on Friday.

Senior Autumn Hanna had a second place finish out of 49 runners in the 100 hurdles.

Junior Caleb Grill had a second place finish out of 54 jumpers in the high jump.

Senior Nate Jones and junior Kael Ecord had a second and third place finishes out of 72 runners in the 1600 meters.

Jones also beat 52 other runners to win the 3200.

Sophomore Cassie Onwugbufor had a second place finish out of 68 jumpers in the long jump.

Senior Carson Pierce had a fourth place finish out of 55 runners in the 1600 meters.

The 4×400 relay team of junior Lindsay Adams, sophomore Makenzie Owings, Pierce and Onwugbufor finished third.

The track team will be back on Friday.

The boys tennis team had a first place finish at Derby on Thursday.

Junior Brennen Sander and Jack Russell placed second in number one and two singles.

Seniors Ashton Cole and Logan Schultz placed second in number two doubles.

Juniors Chase Schreiner and Tanner Ohnmeis placed first in number one doubles.

The boys also competed at Collegiate on Monday and at McPherson on Saturday.

They will be back in action on Tuesday.

The girls swimming team competed at Wichita West on Saturday.

They will compete again on Tuesday.
