Although they lost 14 seniors after taking the state title last season, the baseball team is striving to carry on their legacy.

The Eagles defeated Kapaun Mt. Carmel 7-6 and fell to Blue Valley West 10-6 at home on Saturday.

For the majority of the team, this was their first time having varsity playing time.

“It was cool playing varsity,” senior Carson Avery said. “But it didn’t feel any different from playing JV or any other baseball game I’ve ever played.

Avery is one of the many returning players this season stepping into varsity shoes.

In the game against Kapaun, the Eagles trailed until the seventh inning, when they came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

“We never gave up,” Avery said. “Even with the errors and all the walks, we still fought offensively.”

Sophomore Cole Sphar had the game-winning hit and sophomore Caleb Hicks was the winning pitcher for the Eagles against Kapaun.

The boys gave up six runs in the third inning against Blue Valley West, and struggled to catch up for the remainder of the game.

“Defensive communication killed us,” Avery said.

The boys will be back in action at home Tuesday against Bishop Carroll at 6 p.m.
