Sub-State wrap-up: Girls basketball advances to State Tournament
March 4, 2018
The girls basketball team is the Sub-State Champions after victories against Eisenhower and Andover in the Sub-State Tournament this week. The Eagles will advance to compete in the State Tournament in Topeka.
“It feels amazing to go to State knowing we are going to represent our school,” junior Alexis Cauthon said. “The plan for State is to go out and play our best game and win a State title.”
On Wednesday, the girls faced Eisenhower at home and defeated the Tigers 47-29. The following Saturday, the Eagles faced Andover at home and defeated them 59-47.
Cauthon said that the team’s strongest attribute is their motivation to prove to everyone what they are made of.
“Everyone counted us out from the beginning of the season,” she said. “We have made it this far and we are planning to go all the way.”
Cauthon said the girls hope to improve on their execution before they travel to Topeka. She said they are striving to score each time they get the ball.
The Eagles will face Mill Valley (18-4) in the first round of the State Tournament on Thursday at 4:45 p.m.
The boys basketball team defeated Great Bend 78-40 on Tuesday in the first Sub-State game, but fell to Salina Central 40-30 on Friday in the finals to end to their season.
“The season was great and went by super fast,” senior Antonio Espinoza said. “The memories I made were ones to have for the rest of my life.”
The boys finished their season as AVCTL Division 1 Champs.
“I just knew that my two teammates [seniors] and I were the oldest dudes and had to show the younger guys how to act,” Espinoza said. “I knew that whatever I did, my teammates were watching me.”
