The boys basketball team will head to sub-state with an AVCTL Division 1 Champion title under its belt. The team was picked to finish sixth in the league in the preseason coaches poll, but proved this prediction wrong.

The Eagles defeated Salina South 64-47 on Friday, senior night, adding another win to their 16-4 record.

The boys will play their first game in the sub-state tournament against Great Bend at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Junior Caleb Grill said that the senior leadership on the team has been a major factor in the team’s success so far.

“We will just keep doing what we are good at and playing our rolls,” Grill said.

The girls (14-6) also had success with a 46-33 win over Salina South on Friday. They will also continue their season in the sub-state tournament this week as well.

“We will be fully focused on the task at hand which is winning each sub-state game to make it to state,” junior Alexis Cauthon said.

Cauthon said that the team’s main strength is compatibility, and that the girls plan to play to that strength to succeed at sub-state.

“Our team works so well together and when we do play for each other we accomplish great things,” she said.

The girls will play their first game in the sub-state tournament against Eisenhower at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“The team is striving to meet our ultimate goal of winning state,” Cauthon said.
