Boys basketball defeats Maize South
January 26, 2018
The boys basketball team defeated rival Maize South 66-55 at Maize South. Junior Cade McGaugh said that the energy that the Eagles brought to the court on Friday was a major strength in the game.
“We focused on getting the ball into the paint,” McGaugh said. “The crowd, the energy was phenomenal, and it’s unexplainable how loud it was. We struggled finishing, but luckily grabbed offensive rebounds.”
At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles led the Mavericks 19-13. At the half, Maize was still in the lead 31-24. By the top of the fourth, the Mavericks were still trailing 53-38.
“It feels good,” McGaugh said, “We didn’t want people to lose hope in us and beating a good Maize South team felt amazing.”
In preparation for upcoming games, McGaugh said the team needs to focus on executing in late game situations, continuing to work hard, running plays correctly and working on defense.
Junior Caleb Grill said that although the Eagles were playing a rival team, he had the mindset that it was just another game. Last week, the boys fell to undefeated Eisenhower. Grill said the team was looking to get back on track after that loss.
The Eagles are now 12-3. They will be back in action Friday at Derby.
