Maize hosts College and Career night
January 19, 2018
Maize will be hosting a College and Career night on Monday, Jan. 22 in the new Career Academy Building at 6 p.m.
Maize College and Career Advocate, Diane Close, said she hopes for the attendance of students to increase significantly from last year.
“Last year 100 people attended, as far as students and parents go,” she said. “We hope to increase that as the word gets out through social media and posters.”
At last year’s College and Career night, Maize invited Spirit AeroSystems to the event to offer summer internship for students interested in their field of work.
“Last year was our first opportunity for students to do the summer internship at Spirit,” Close said. “Spirit will be back this year, and they will be increasing the number of students they are allowing to participate in this year’s internship.”
Maize also invited the Workforce Alliance, for the first time. According to their website, The Workforce Alliance helps students find potential tools and jobs to further their career path.
Close said she is excited to see students get their questions answered in regards to their future.
“College and Career night is just another opportunity,” Close said. “Students and parents can ask questions or gain information from those individuals at the institutions and the businesses that we have invited in.”
This event not only offers opportunities for students to build relationships with those in charge of colleges and institutions, but Close said she feels it also gives students a chance to learn what skills they’ll need before leaving high school.
“The best advice that my mother ever gave me,” Close said. “Was to leave high school with a sellable skill. Have an idea of where your interests are. The only way you will really know what you want to do is by getting out there and making yourself favorable and gaining experience by going to this event.”
