Girls basketball beat Hutch 57-34 on the Salt Hawks home court last Tuesday, its first game since Winter break.

Junior Alexis Cauthon, who scored 17 points, said over the break that the team worked a lot of defense, which carried over to the game.

“We emphasized it [defense] a lot so we played really good defense, had a lot of steals and traps and deflections,” Cauthon said.

Sophomore Cassie Onwugbufor had her first eligible varsity Maize start since transferring from North West High.

“It was just a different environment,” Onwugbufor said. “I mean either way I just like to play basketball, but just a different coach, different team, different playing style, but it’s good to get back on the court.”

Onwugbufor said over break that the team didn’t slack at practice.

We had a big emphasis on being tough and playing harder,” Onwugbufor said. “So our practices were just really like petal to the metal, not being lazy like fundamentals,”

The Eagles play Salina Central this Friday at home.
