Maize football knocks off Heights to advance in playoffs

Football took victory over Heights 41-14 in the regional championship game. The Eagles will advance to the next round of the playoffs against Bishop Carroll on Friday.
Maize (9-1) finished the first quarter with three touchdowns, and shutout Heights (6-4) for the final three quarters of the game.
Within the first minute of the game, Heights had a 54-yard kick return leading to a touchdown. Heights led Maize 7-0 until junior Caleb Grill had a touchdown pass to sophomore Preven Christon, tying the score 7-7.
Grill had another touchdown pass to sophomore Camden Jurgensen. Maize was on top again until Heights scored a touchdown, tying the score for the second time 14-14.
Christon had a second touchdown with a pass from Grill, finishing the first quarter with a 24-14 led.
The score remained 24-14 through the second and third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, junior Tanner Ohnmeis intercepted a Heights pass, the Eagles led 27-14.
Johnson scored a touchdown for the Eagles, Maize still holding Heights 34-14 with 9:59 left in the game.
Senior Antonio Espinoza had a fumble return, and with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter, the Eagles held Heights 41-14 for the remainder of the game.
“We came together. We played as a family,” senior Dalyn Johnson said. “We just played well all around.”
No. 4 Maize will be back in action at Bishop Carroll (9-1) for next Friday’s quarterfinal game.
