Maize football defeated Hutchinson 14-13 on Friday, the fifth consecutive win for the Eagles.

Hutch had not lost to Maize in over ten years, and this game ended their winning streak.

Maize jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a fumble recovery and two touchdowns from Dalyn Johnson.

Hutch cut the lead to 14-13 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Antonio Espinoza’s pick gave Maize possession of the ball with 15 seconds left, helping to secure the win.

“Winning the game gave us a great set up for the playoffs,” Espinoza said. “We knew we needed to win and that’s what we did. We came together all as one and played like a true team overall.”

The Eagles will be back in action in a playoff game against Topeka West (1-7) next Friday at home.
