Maize football backers will hold their annual pancake feed fundraiser on Saturday.  This fundraiser raises money for the football program to pay for things like feeding the boys on game days, banquet preparations and other necessities that come up during their season. There will also be a silent auction taking place during the feed with items donated by all of the players and local businesses.

This is the biggest fundraiser the football program has. It has allowed the boys to purchase items like new uniforms and pants.The football program hopes to continue purchasing new items with the help of the fundraiser.

“We get a lot of people to participate in it and there is great food. You get to enjoy a nice pancake, sausage, and juice breakfast. It goes back to our student athletes. You are going to eat breakfast anyway, you might as well eat it here. ” Head Football Coach, Gary Guzman said. This will be Guzman’s seventh year coaching the Eagles.

Tickets are $5 at the door and the feed goes from 7-11 in the morning. Parent volunteers and the football players  all help make the pancakes.

Kama Crockett, mother of sophomore Colton Crockett, is in charge of the feed and believes this annual event helps everyone bond as a football family.

“It is important for family and friends to support the backers because it gives the boys a sense of community and to know they have that community behind them,” Crockett said. “It’s great the way the upperclassmen and their parents step up to show the newer faces how to make things happen.”

Along with the families, friends, other students and Maize supporters who attend, the Cheer Team and Flygirls also attend each year to show support for the team.

“I think it’s important for us to support the boys because it definitely shows school spirit,” Karsyn Buzard, senior cheer captain said. “It’ll be easier to get other people to come if they know that their friends are going to be there.”

The Eagles have their first game away at Newton on September 1, and then they will play at home for the first time this season against Eisenhower on September 8.

“All the money goes back to the football team so we can wear nice jerseys and look good on Friday game days, so support the football team and buy some pancakes,” said Matthew Melchor, senior football player.
