After 10 years of roaming the halls of Maize, Darwin the tortoise died Tuesday. Darwin was science teacher and FFA sponsor Jay Super’s tortoise.

Super said he had Darwin for almost 12 years and got her when she was a baby.

“I got her because I thought they [tortoises] were cute, and I just wanted one,” Super said.

Although tortoises are long-term commitment pets, Super said he researched how to care for them and decided to take on the challenge.

“My favorite memory with her was when she walked around and went to other classrooms,” Super said. “At one point the farthest she made it was all the way down by the front of the library.”

Super isn’t the only person who had good memories with Darwin.

“She would always wander into my room and students would get a kick out of her,”  science teacher Gary Jacobson said.

Senior David Hammett said Darwin meant something to everyone.

“Everyone is definitely going to miss Darwin,” he said.
