Football beats Newton in the first game of the season

The Eagles started their football season Friday night with a win against Newton 49-27.

In the first quarter, junior Dalyn Johnson scored the first touchdown for Maize, giving them a 7-0 lead. Junior Brayden Payne also ran 14-yards for a touchdown, making the score 14-7.

In the second quarter, senior Jake Shields and Johnson both scored, bringing the score to 28-14 at the half.

In the third quarter, Maize extended their lead with Johnson running for a 44-yard score, and a 20-yard pass to senior Tyson Love, making the score 42-20.

In the fourth quarter, senior Chandler Kelly scores a 100 yard touchdown after intercepting the ball, ending the game with a score of 49-27.

“We showed a lot improvement from last year,” Kelley said, “We played with a lot of heart. It’s a good way to start the season off.”

Football plays away this Friday against Eisenhower.
