On Saturday, Maize hosted the annual Maize Invitational wrestling tournament. As a team, the Eagles placed fifth out of 12 schools.

“I felt pretty good going into the tournament, we took second last year,” junior Cole Moses said. “I feel like we definitely could have done better.”

Moses took third on Saturday in the 145 weight class.

Junior Alex Hydock agrees with Moses.

“I think we could’ve done a little better. Our lower weights are all pretty young, they’re mostly freshmen and sophomores. As a team we definitely held our own,” Hydock, who took second in the 152 weight class, said.

Leaders Moses, Hydock and junior Brett Moon have continued to shine for the Eagles. Moon took first for the 160 weight class and has yet to lose this season. Upcoming wrestler sophomore Zac Grantham fought his way to the finals, taking second place for the 113 weight class.

Coach Mike Schauer believes the Eagles perform better as a whole during tournaments rather than duals.

“We are a good tournament team. I like tournaments, they’re good for us,” Schauer said. “We lost a couple of matches that we easily could’ve won. We lost two overtime matches that I thought we could’ve won.”

This Saturday the Eagles will travel to Newton for one of the biggest tournaments of the year.

“Thats what you do, you wrestle and you improve your mistakes. We need to improve on finishing our moves,” Schauer said.
