Winter sports started this week, and seniors from all sports are looking forward to their upcoming seasons.

Boys basketball:

There will be a great line up for the upcoming basketball season. One of the returning seniors, Jacob Hanna is hoping for a better turn out than last season.

“We lost in our first round of SubState,” Hanna said. “I know for the guys on our team it was disappointing for sure, but this off season has definitely given us an edge.”

Hanna said that the goal in the upcoming season is a championship ring.

“I personally think if we come together as a team, practice intensely, and play without egos, we’ll have great success this year and possibly reach that goal,” he said.

Hanna said the state title and performing as best as possible is every team’s goal.

“Compete everyday as hard as possible in practice and good things will happen,” he said.

Girls basketball:

Girls basketball had a great season last year, although it was unfortunately cut short during the State tournament due to a first round loss. The team is optimistic about their chances this year, especially senior Sydney Holmes.

“I think we have a good shot of winning league and of course just make it to state,” she said.

Because this is Holmes’ senior season, she hopes to have her best season yet.

“My mindset is still the same, that I want to win as many games as possible,” she said. “But I think my work ethic has improved just because I have to set an example of how hard we are going to work this year.”

Since this is Holmes’ senior year, the memories made with her team this year will last a lifetime.

“I’m really excited for team dinners and hanging out with my teammates,” she said. “I think in ten years we probably won’t remember every game or every practice but I’ll for sure remember the memories we make off the court.”

Boys swim:

Boys swim is coming off of a successful season last year, having multiple boys medal at State. After a good showing at the 2019 State meet, the boys are hoping to have another great season. Senior Josh Sprowls said they already have many goals in mind.

“As a team, our goals are to win league and do good at state,” he said. “Individually, I want to win my events at league and to be first team [in] all state.”

Sprowls was also able to see where improvements could be made from last year, so the boys will be prepared and ready to improve this year.

“I think the main thing we need to improve on is technique,” he said.

With the impending season comes many things to look forward to, many of the athletes look forward to being with their team again. Sprowls is no different.

“I am most looking forward to just seeing everyone again and hanging [and having] a lot of fun,” he said. “I don’t get to see a lot of the people because they go to school on the other days.”

Wrestling:

The wrestling team is looking promising this year with returning seniors and many other star wrestlers. Senior Mitchael Casement will be one of the team leaders along with three other seniors. Casement is optimistic and predicts that the team will have a successful season.

“No doubt we have one of the best teams in the state,” he said. “We will win our league for the fourth year straight and will finish top three in state, if not first.”

Casement said that his individual goal is to place at state this season.

“What will motivate me is how close I was to getting to state before losing,” he said. “It’s my last season so I have to go all out.”

Casement said that the team is still waiting to find out if they will have a season. But if the season commences, he says the team will perform great.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how we grow as a team,” he said.
