Oscars 2019: What won and what should have won

Meaghann Flower, Reporter

The coveted Oscar awards were handed out over the weekend to many talented actors and actresses.

The 91st Academy Awards was held on February 24, 2019. All categories were filled with amazing talent. I think that everyone who was nominated for an Oscar is very talented and deserved to be nominated, but I also think that certain people deserved to win more than others. Here is who won the major categories, and who I thought should have won.

Best Supporting Actress:

Winner: Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”

My Vote: Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”

This division was filled with amazingly talented actresses including, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Amy Adams, and Marina De Tavira. I was personally voting for Regina King. I have been a fan of Regina King since she was in “A Cinderella Story”, and “The Gabby Douglas Story”. I think she is an amazing actress, and she was amazing in “If Beale Street Could Talk”. This was Regina King’s first Oscar win ever, and I think it was well deserved.

Best Sound Editing:

Winner: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

My Vote: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

My personal vote in this category was “Bohemian Rhapsody” because I am a big fan of the movie, and I love Queen music. I think that the way they made every concert scene seem like the audience was really screaming and singing along with the band was amazing.

Best Supporting Actor:

Winner: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”

My Vote: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”

Best supporting actor was another category that was filled with a bunch of talent. In “Green Book”, Mahershala Ali plays a famous African-American pianist, who is about to go down to the deep south for concert tours in 1962. I think that his character was very inspirational. Ali played the character very well and I think he deserved the Oscar.

Best Original Song:

Winner: Shallow, “A Star Is Born”

My Vote: All the Stars, “Black Panther”

Although I really like the song Shallow by Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper, I think that All the Stars, by Kendrick Lamar is a better song. I also think that All the Stars is a more popular song. “A Star is Born” was nominated for seven other awards that night. “Black Panther” was nominated for five other awards that night. Although I wanted All the Stars to win, I am happy that Shallow won.

Best Actor:

Winner: Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”

My Vote: Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”

I am very happy that Rami Malek won Best Actor. I really enjoy the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and I thought Rami Malek was amazing as Freddie Mercury. I think that he captured the essence of Freddie Mercury very well. When I watched “Bohemian Rhapsody”, I couldn’t believe how much he looked and sounded like Mercury. This was Rami Malek’s first Oscar win.

Best Picture:

Winner: “Green Book”

My Vote: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

This category is one of the biggest categories of the night, and it was filled with amazing movies with amazing casts and crews. I really enjoy both of these movies, so I am not upset that “Green Book” won, but I really wanted “Bohemian Rhapsody” to win. I thought “Bohemian Rhapsody” deserved the win because of how well all of the actors portrayed the band Queen. They were both Oscar worthy movies, “Green Book” won three Oscars that night, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” won four.
