The week in sports: 12/5 – 12/9

With a buzzer-beater scored by junior Chase Schreiner, Maize boys basketball defeated Derby 61-59 on Friday. Last season, the Panthers scored a buzzer-beater to defeat Maize 67-66.

“There was a lot of pressure because I did not want to let my team or the school down,” Schreiner said.

At halftime, Maize led Derby 37-25. After the third quarter, the Eagles still held Derby 51-44. Derby began to draw level to Maize in a close fourth quarter.

“We were all just grateful that we could pull out a win,” Schreiner said. “Especially in an important league game like that.”

The Eagles also defeated Salina South 62-48 on the road Tuesday.

Next week, the boys will play away at Haysville-Campus on Tuesday, and play Newton at home on Friday.

The girls basketball team defeated Salina South on Tuesday 32-20. Maize fell to Derby 49-24 on Friday. The Eagles will also play away at Haysville-Campus on Tuesday, and Newton at home on Friday next week.

Wrestling defeated Salina South 75-3 in a dual at home on Thursday. The team also placed 6th overall at the Mid-American Nationals, a tournament held in Enid, Oklahoma this weekend.

Freshman Kyle Haas placed 1st in his weight class, sophomore Dwayne Villapando placed 3rd and junior Aidan Campbell placed 3rd.

The Eagles will travel to Haysville-Campus next week for a dual on Thursday, and attend a tournament at Emporia on Saturday.
