Maize mens soccer competed in the annual Titan Classic Tournament this week, ending with a seventh place finish.

The boys fell to Dodge City 10-0 in the first game of the tournament on Monday.

The Eagles lost to Newton 3-2 in the second game of the tournament on Thursday.

In the first half of the game, junior Logan Voran scored for the Eagles, followed by a second goal scored by senior Gavin Caler. Newton scored two goals as well. Maize and Newton tied 2-2 at the half.

In the second half, Newton scored a goal, leaving Maize trailing for the remainder of the game.

“I think after they [Newton] was able to tie up the game, we just lost our momentum and couldn’t connect with each other,” sophomore Marco Ibarra said.

In the final game of the tournament on Saturday, the boys beat Liberal 4-3.

In the first half, freshman Max Shea scored two goals for Maize. Liberal scored one goal in the first half, ending the first half Maize 2-1.

In the second half, Senior Jake Cardenas scored two goals for the Eagles. Liberal also scored two goals leaving the final score 4-3.

“We knew that we had what it took to beat them,” Cardenas said. “We had to come together and really work as a unit if we wanted to win.”

Cardenas says this season is going to be about building team chemistry in order to be successful.

Maize will play it’s next regular season game against Andover on Tuesday.
