Both teams went nearly 70 minutes without scoring until senior Gavin Caler scored the winning point for Maize.

Senior Gavin Caler scored with 9 minutes remaining in the game, and the Eagles defeated Valley Center 1-0 in boys soccer Thursday for their first win of the season.

“It felt amazing [scoring], especially with all the crowd and my teammates,” Caler said. Caler says communication and passing are aspects of the game the team needs to work on to come back stronger for the next game.

This was Maize’s second game of the season, and first home game. The Eagles, who lost their opener against Bishop Carroll, will be back in action at 6:30 on Monday at Dodge City.
