Homecoming week was filled with hallway decorations, spirit days, and a pep assembly to end it. But South Student Council recently added a competition for class of the year.

“COTY is basically class of the of the year and it normally happens during homecoming week,” Jessika Archya, 10, said. “All the people that participate during each day of the week get tallied up for each grade and then the class that wins is the class of the year.”

COTY points were counted up in second block, teachers tallied up the number of students that displayed their school spirit.

“I am planning to participate in all of the spirit days this week,” Makenna Cook, 10, said.  “I’m most excited to dress up on red carpet day because I like being able to dress up in something other than a t-shirt and leggings like usual.”

Many students didn’t get involved in spirit week activities, and StuCo noticed this issue; to remedy the problem, they decided to create the friendly competition to get more students to take part in the activities.

“We wanted to bring friendly competition it’s also good way to bring more awareness to the spirit week,” Archya said. “We have noticed that not very many students participate in spirit week so it’s a good idea to get participation if there is a prize in the end.”

The prizes included a free t-shirt and a Chik-fil-a sandwich. Stuco tallies points at sporting event, homecoming activities, and during dance.

“I think being able to compete for a prize is more fun than just dressing up all week,” Allie Zwetzig, 10, said. “More people will start to get more into it because a lot of us are very competitive.”
