The class of 2017 nominated five junior girls as Prom Princess candidates. Students will have the chance to vote for who they want to win out of the nominated. On prom night, votes will be counted and the winner will be announced.

Jacey Handy

Jacey Handy is one of the candidates that the students nominated for Prom Princess. Handy is in Business Professionals of America, Peer Helpers and is the president of Red Rage, Pep Club and French Club. She also puts a lot of effort into the student council.

“I play a lot of sports in my free time and I don’t have much free time because I have a lot of homework,” Handy said.

Her main goal after high school is to play basketball in college, but she fears she won’t push herself hard enough during her life. Handy was inspired by her sister, who was a homecoming candidate, to strive to become a Prom Princess candidate.

“I love everyone and I just think it [winning] would be a really cool experience and it would make me really happy,” Handy said.

Jayde Byrd

Jayde Byrd said she is honored to be nominated but isn’t asking people to vote for her as she will be sharing the experience with two of her best friends and thinks that it will be fun whatever the outcome ends up being.

“I’m not going around saying ‘vote for me, vote for me.’  I’m just kind of saying you know what, if you want to vote for me that’s cool,” Byrd said.

Byrd and her family often volunteer and help out the community.

“The shrine [is] an organization that we do a lot of volunteer work [for],” Byrd said. “[We] help kids at the Shrine hospital, burn victims.”

Byrd is a Maize South Middle School mentor which means that once a month she hangs out with a middle school students who needs somebody to look up to and spend time with for the day.

She hopes to go to Wichita State so she can be a physician’s assistant and then later become a doctor in her future.

Paige Hutson

Paige Hutson enjoys participating in new things and being out and about. Huston hopes this experience will help her to open up more and be less nervous around new crowds of people.

“I’m nervous to walk up on stage and fall on my face but in general just embarrassing myself,” Huston said. “I feel like everyone is a little scared of embarrassing themselves in a group of people.”

She wants to stay close to home and attend Wichita State so she can be an anesthesiologist.

Taylor Holmes

Taylor Holmes thinks it would be fun to win Prom Princess. Holmes spends her time hanging out with friends and playing sports. After high school, she wants to go to Pitt State and study to be a veterinarian or a dental hygienist. Holmes said she is heavily inspired by Coach Guzman.

“Whenever I see him he always puts me in a better mood because he’s always smiling [and] he always knows whenever I’m sad,” Holmes said. “He comes up to me and will talk to me and make me all happy and so he inspires me.”

Emma Hahn

Emma Hahn was surprised when she was looking over the list of names for the nominated Prom Princess candidates and saw her name show up on the list.

“I’m not really scared of it [Prom Princess], it’s just not something that I’m used to,” Hahn said.

She said that she feels she is the most nerdy out of all of the candidates and that’s what separates her from the other candidates.

Hahn is very involved in school and is a member in Student Council, Peer Helpers, Kay Board, National Honors Society and Feminist Club. Hahn likes to knit, hang out with friends and watch Netflix.
