Dear Mom

Mikaela Stevenson, Advertising Manager

Dear Mom,

I feel as if you think I am still ten years old and need to hold your hand through Dillon’s.

Sorry to tell you, but I’m not.

Yes, I know that I’m your oldest, and me growing up probably isn’t the easiest thing to swallow, but for god sake mom, ease up.

For example, let me drive places after school without you being on my back about going straight home.

Seriously?

I’ve had my license now for almost a year, two if you count my permit. I will be leaving in less than a year.

Are you still going to baby me and treat me like the ten year old you think I am?

Come on, just give me a break.

Please?

I just want to go over to a friend’s house without you having to call their parents. You’ve raised me to be a respectable, responsible child/young adult.

I feel there’s a time to cut the cord, and that time is now. If you don’t, it will be ten times harder for you when I do leave.

All I want is for you to start getting me ready for the real world, and let me just tell you, this isn’t the way to do it.

You want to know what I’ll do in college? Most likely party. I’ll be honest, I will go to a few.

Did that rumple your feathers just a bit?

I hope so. Maybe that will get you to realize that I am leaving.

Sincerely,

Your daughter who doesn’t like being tied down.
