As the weather begins to get cooler and the leaves change, most think of one thing and one thing only; fall football.

This year’s football lineup has some new faces, and they’re not all freshman. Seniors Alex Hydock, Josh Caudell and Kameron Swenson chose to start their football careers late in their high school run.

Although they are new to high school football, they are familiar among the Maize Athletic Department. All three of the seniors have been on the wrestling team, and both Caudell and Swenson have participated in track.

“Since it’s my senior year, I thought that I might as well play football and help out the team,” Hydock said.

Hydock is a linebacker that has not played football since he entered high school.

“I’ve played football since first grade all the way throughout eighth grade. but I stopped during high school because I wanted to focus on wrestling,” Hydock said.

Though Caudell and Swenson have been on the wrestling and track teams, they decided to give football a try for their last year of high school.

“I’m just trying not to get hurt,” defensive end Swenson said.

Bad experiences from middle school football have kept him of the field on Friday nights.

Caudell and Swenson both agree that winning is in their main interest this season, while Hydock is looking forward to Friday nights. You can see Hydock, Caudell and Swenson on the field at 7 p.m. Friday at Derby.
