Eitor’s note: This is a series of stories that will spotlight Maize students chosen at random. The idea comes from reporter Steve Hartman’s series formerly broadcast on CBS News.

Senior Samuel Gilchrist has been playing guitar since middle school.

“I hated it until sixth grade and there was a switch and I just started loving it,” Gilchrist said. “It’s a way for me to relax and that’s the way I’ve always treated it”.

The love of the guitar eventually lead him to create his alternative rock band, Tideway, a year ago.

“Trent Gaddie [and I] met over winter break and I just asked him if he wanted to jam and it [took] off from there,” Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist said he spends most of his free time time making making music music with the band.

“It’s just a hobby, it’s something we do for fun,” Gilchrist said. “Some kids play videos games and we just make music.”
